All eyes were on the dedication ceremony for the opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center on Thursday. There were countless memorable moments, with celebrities and political giants both onstage and in the crowd to celebrate the historic institution and the president it's named for.
Michelle Obama was there, of course, joined by daughters Malia and Sasha, as well as other former presidents and fellow former First Ladies. And while we were engrossed in the moving and meaningful speech she gave, an especially pretty beauty detail managed to subtly stand out: her pastel blue manicure.

As she gestured expressively from the podium, we got a clear view of her dreamy, baby-blue nails. Although not one of the typical neutral colors you might expect to see on a First Lady, Michelle makes the sweet shade feel equal parts sophisticated and joyful. The soft hue stood out gently against her textured, striped suit, and it just so happens to match her husband’s necktie—because when are these two not the cutest?

In addition to being an instantly iconic political beauty moment, Michelle’s nails provide further proof of what’s shaping up to become one of summer's biggest nail trends: pastels. A few weeks ago, Taylor Swift stepped out in New York City wearing a millennial mint green manicure, while Emily Blunt attended the UK premiere of Disclosure Day in a stunning lavender.
So if famous fingertips have anything to say about it, soft, relaxing shades will be ubiquitous as we all try to chill during the hottest months.
